Sustainable Biomass Project: BIOTEM
BIOTEM (mini Biogas) project, implemented in cooperation with TEMSAN and UNIDO, aims to meet the energy needs of citizens engaged in animal husbandry in rural areas where there is no natural gas, from clean and renewable sources. Within the scope of this project, it is aimed to meet the energy needs, especially to be used in stoves, by using biogas.
Biogas is a flammable gas containing 50-80% methane and 20-50% carbon dioxide, and is a clean and renewable energy source. BIOTEM is designed as a unit that produces biogas using organic waste. The Mini Biogas Unit is capable of meeting the cooking needs of a household for three meals from the waste produced by 1-3 cattle.
Production Capacity and Components
When 20 liters of cattle waste is loaded into the bioreactor daily, approximately 1 cubic meter of biogas is obtained. In one month, this system produces biogas equivalent to a 12-kilogram kitchen gas cylinder.
Mini Biogas Unit consists of basic components such as bioreactor, gas tank, biogas pump, humidifier, desulphurizer and gas burner. Bioreactor is the part where organic waste is located and gas production takes place. Bacteria in the waste produce methane in the temperature range of 20-40°C (optimum 37°C). Produced biogas is transmitted to the gas tank via gas hoses and from there it is transferred to the burners via pump and used.
Applications and IoT Tracking System
BİOTEM has been established in various regions of Turkey, and the data obtained during biogas production (temperature, biogas, methane, electricity) can be monitored through a map-based IoT system.
